Welcome to the Smart Geothermal Industrial Loop (SGIL) project website.
The imperative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has never been stronger and urgent. This urgency necessitates considering all possible renewable energy sources to decarbonise the economy.
Geothermal energy is an emissions-free, sustainable alternative to natural gas combustion for heating.
An SGIL will deliver geothermal energy as a cost-effective, sustainable, low-emission solution to replace natural gas for low-grade heat.
From about 650 metres beneath Morwell, the SGIL will draw hot water from the Lower Tertiary Aquifer. It will then distribute the heat through a network of pipes and heat exchangers on the surface, returning cooler water to the aquifer a kilometre from its extraction point. Thus, no water from the aquifer will be consumed, only heat.
Modelling has indicated the geothermal doublet could sustainably deliver heat into the SGIL for at least 1000 years. Our economic analysis also predicts significant cost savings for industries linked to the SGIL.
Join us and work together towards a more sustainable future with geothermal energy.
