Ob-1 Matching Refractive Indices
Aim
To demonstrate that there is no reflection or change in refractive angle at a "boundary" where the refractive indices are equal.
Apparatus
- Pyrex Beaker Large
- Pyrex Beaker small
- Johnson's Baby oil
Matching Refractive Indices.
Description
A small Pyrex beaker is placed inside a larger Beaker and Baby Oil is poured into the smaller beaker till the oil overflows into the larger beaker. The oil has a refractive index equal in value to the refractive index of the Pyrex glass. It is seen that the close matching of the refractive indices make the smaller beaker practically invisible.
