Na-16 Electron Diffraction

Aim

To demonstrate that electrons can exhibit wave-like behaviour.

Apparatus

  • Electron Diffraction Tube
  • TV Camera and Monitor

Electron Diffraction 1 Electron Diffraction 2

Electron Diffraction Tube.

Description

The electron tube consists of targets of films of Aluminium and Graphite. An electron beam is fired into these targets. When Aluminium is used a set of diffraction rings, is produced on the screen. Increasing the voltage will decrease the size of the rings, while decreasing the voltage will increase the size of the rings. Thus, greater energy electrons have smaller wavelengths associated withthem. When the graphite target is used a hexagonal array of dots isproduced, which suggests that graphite has a hexagonal crystal structure.
