Hd-4 Pressure Versus Volume Using Air Table

Aim

To demonstrate that pressure increases as volume decreases for a closed system of gas.

Apparatus

  • Air Table
  • Magnetic Pucks
  • Air Blower
  • Magnetic Barrier
  • Overhead Projector or Overhead Video Camera

Pressure vs. Volume Using Air Table

Pressure Versus Volume Using Air Table.

Description

With the apparatus setup as in the above diagram. The air blower is turned on so that the magnetic pucks float around having repulsive magnetic collisions. Using the magnetic barrier to decrease the area the magnetic pucks can float around. The average distance that pucks collide is greatly reduced. The greater the area is reduced the greater the number of collisions. This is replicating the situation that happens in a cylinder and piston. Such as a  Diesel Engine.
