EH-10 Diamagnetism Levitation
Aim
To demonstrate magnetic levitation of a diamagnetic material.
Apparatus
- Pencil lead (0.5HB Begreen) (not all are suitable)
- Magnet array
Description
Graphite is a diamagnetic material. When a sample is placed in a magnetic field a magnetic dipole moment is induced in the opposite direction to the magnetic field. This leads to repulsion from the strong field region of a non-uniform magnetic field that is created by the magnet array. This phenomenon can be used to levitate diamagnetic materials.
