Large Scale Facility Physics

Our Research

Many breakthroughs in science now require large-scale facilities and large-scale international teams. Examples include the particle physics laboratories at CERN, where the Higgs boson was recently detected, to powerful ground and space telescopes used to study stars and galaxies, to Synchrotron Facilities that probe and investigate fundamental properties of matter, with applications in material science and biophysics.

Researchers in the School of Physics are actively involved - often with leadership positions - in projects that take advantage of some of the largest experimental facilities currently available, and are engaged in the development of next generation laboratories. Our theoretical and experimental research projects are tackling several of the ‘big open questions’ in physics, ranging from quantum science and sub-atomic physics all the way up to the structure of the Universe.
