Casual Tutor and Demonstrator Positions in Physics

Casual academic staff play an important role in the School of Physics, supporting our academic staff and helping our students.

Anyone wishing to apply for a casual teaching position within the School of Physics must complete their application via the Casual Tutor Recruitment System (link below). Please read through the position description and relevant information first. When entering your information, please be as accurate as possible to ensure a fair and speedy selection process. Successful applicants will be notified by email as per the schedule below.

Note: All classes will now be delivered on campus.


Position descriptions

  1. Download & read position description.
  2. After selecting Apply Now, create a user account in the Casual Tutor Recruitment System (CTRS).
  3. Through the CTRS, upload your credentials and select the subjects for which you would like to be considered.

Tutor Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct problem-based classes to the standard of the School of Physics. This may include preparing a brief lesson plan in line with the weekly topic and facilitating informed group discussions relating to the lecture and weekly readings.
  • Consultation with students.
  • Attendance at meetings as required by the Course Coordinator.
  • Keep accurate attendance record in line with University Policy.

Demonstrator key responsibilities

  • Expected to complete all training required by the School of Physics.
  • Attend meetings as required by the Subject Coordinator.
  • Conduct laboratory sessions to the standard of the School of Physics. This includes preparing before lab session and assist students during laboratory session.
  • Work closely with students during lab sessions and guide them through experiments.
  • Mark students’ lab workbooks and provide timely feedback to students accordingly.
  • Manage and administrate students’ results.
  • Keep accurate attendance record in conjunction with the Subject Coordinator and in line with University Policy.
  • Promote & uphold laboratory safety.

Important notes

To work as a demonstrator or tutor in the School of Physics, you must have a valid Employee Working with Children Check.

If you are offered a role with us, you can begin the application process during your onboarding. Further information is available from the University's Working with children check: Casual staff web page.

  • Your application must be lodged through the CTRS to be considered, and all casual academic staff must have applied formally.
  • Late applications will not be accepted unless an exceptional circumstance arises based on the School's requirements.
  • Most applicants will receive an outcome within the timeframe listed below. However, because these positions are dependent on student enrolments, some applicants may only receive a final notification closer to the teaching start date.
  • To be eligible to teach, all tutors and demonstrators MUST attend the training sessions as scheduled below.
  • For important Health and Safety reasons, attendance at training sessions is required by ALL casual staff prior to delivering classes each semester.
