Do Physics Research in a High Momentum Environment!
New Globally Competitive MSc
Since 2009 the School of Physics offers a MSc program which runs for two years rather than the traditional one year for Honours. This provides an expanded and excellent preparation for a PhD in Physics.
Here is a link to the postgraduate courses currently on offer for students in the School of Physics:
The School of Physics at the University of Melbourne is one of the largest and best funded Physics Departments in Australia. We have world class research programs in Astrophysics, Optics, Condensed Matter Physics and Particle Physics and the School hosts the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-Ray Science and a node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computer Technology.
Visit us at our expense and see what the School of Physics and Melbourne has to offer.
Research groups will pay for prospective students to visit us and see what the School of Physics and Melbourne has to offer. Contact details are on research group and Centre of Excellence websites:

Scholarships
Prestigious Supplementary Scholarships for Interstate and International Students
Interstate students for 2010 who are awarded an APA will also be awarded a scholarship of up to $10,000, as will outstanding international PhD candidates.
For further information contact A. Prof. Les Allen or Cilla Gloger
If you have a first-class Honours degree or the equivalent then the School of Physics at the University of Melbourne will assist you in obtaining a scholarship.
Most students with a first-class Honours degree will receive an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA). If you don't receive an APA, the School will support you in obtaining a Melbourne Research Scholarship (at the same level).
One of our scholarship holders, Sally Langford (left) recently presented her research work on the ABC program Quantum - see the feature on Earthshine at the ABC web site:

For information about all scholarships click Graduate Research Scholarships. The closing date for Australian citizens and residents for scholarships starting in 2010 is 30 October 2009.
A commitment to excellence in supervision
Our academics want to make sure your research project is a success, and that you will complete your research degree with several publications in high profile journals. All our academics have excellent international connections and will assist you in finding that prestigious post-doctoral position that will further your career.
Prof. Rachel Webster, right, won a Nature Award for Mentoring in Science in 2006 and the University of Melbourne Research Higher Degree Supervision Award in 2009.
All students have supervisory panels and constant monitoring to ensure that everything runs smoothly during the course of their Research project.
A female friendly environment
The School of Physics is known for its female friendly atmosphere. We have a number of female colleagues who form about 25% of the tenured staff.
These include Dr Nicole Bell (left), a theoretician working in particle physics and recipient in 2001 of the Bragg Medal for best PhD thesis submitted by an Australian student.
A. Prof. Ann Roberts (right, far left in photo) is the deputy head of the School of Physics, and an Academic from the Optics group. Ann is pictured with two physicists she supervises - Elaine Miles (middle, a PhD student undertaking research into Art conservation), and Ling Lin (right, a research fellow in Nanophotonics).
Tutoring and demonstrating
There are well paid opportunities for tutoring and demonstrating in our extensive undergraduate programs. Not only does this provide an opportunity to supplement your income on site, it is an opportunity to develop your presentation and leadership skills.
