Experimental Particle Physics

Our Research

Experimental particle physics seeks to understand the universe at its most fundamental level. Our scientists are engaged in large-scale, international experiments in collaboration with researchers across the globe. Our work includes the search for dark matter, collider physics, matter-antimatter asymmetry and physics beyond the Standard Model.

The School has had a long history with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and contributes to a wide variety of physics analyses including Higgs decay modes and the dark matter search at the LHC.

Our work with the Belle II experiment in Japan and its predecessor Belle spans more than two decades. Belle II is situated on the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider and will search for new physics at the high-intensity frontier. Our researchers lead the physics program for the experiment and form the largest university group within the Belle II collaboration.

The School of Physics is also a key proponent of the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory (SUPL) which will house SABRE – the first ever direct-detection dark matter experiment in the southern hemisphere.
